Matt Mochary is a business genius and he wants to help you become a better CEO. You would be in good company, too. Matt is currently advising this ridiculous list of companies and their executives:
- AngelList (Management Coach to executive team)
- Clearbit (CEO Coach to Alex MacCaw)
- Opendoor (CEO Coach to Eric Wu)
- Postmates (CEO Coach to Bastian Lehmann)
- Kleiner Perkins (Coach to Mamoon Hamid)
- Reddit (CEO Coach to Steve Huffman)
- Coinbase (CEO Coach to Brian Armstrong)
- OpenAI (CEO Coach to Sam Altman)
Early Life
It’s clear that Matt has always been one of the brightest people around. He attended one of America’s premier boarding schools, Phillips Academy Andover, then went to Yale for his BA, and finally to Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management for his MBA. Somehow, he got a job as a partner in an tech fund and was printing money in the early phases of the dot.com bubble.
Origin Story
Printing money must have been boring, because Matt left and started Totality, a company focused on managing the hardware and software required for large e-commerce websites. He eventually sold this company to Verizon. After almost exactly one decade, he started Fortune Data Center Development Group. And just two years later he sold his second company. (Read our post on constructing good origin stories).
Sometime before selling Fortune Data, Matt started coaching. This was back in 2012. He worked for free for eight years, starting out with Stanford students, then YC attendees, then narrowing his students to the best and brightest. He created the Mochary Method in 2020.
Matt Mochary has spent years finding the best ways to handle any situation that comes up for a CEO. He learned the concept of ‘zone of competence’ vs ‘zone of genius’ from a book called The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. He took ideas of how to prepare for meetings from Jeff Bezos. The craziest part? He talks about everything in detail with his free e-book, The CEO Within, and a ton of google docs.
